Description | From 1970 to 1984, London Transport (L.T.) was under the management of the Greater London Council (G.L.C.). The government at the time, the Thatcher-led Conservative party, planned to centralise L.T.'s administration, which involved removing the G.L.C.'s control over L.T. The G.L.C, under the leadership of Ken Livingstone, argued that L.T. should remain under local government control and launched a campaign: 'Keep London Transport Local - G.L.C. Working for London'. In spite of the campaign, the G.L.C. was abolished by Thatcher in 1984 and L.T. was effectively nationalised. |
