Description | The south side of the Strand, west of Surrey St, in 1886, showing the fronts of a section of a row of 17th century shop premises and upper chambers. White notes that the houses were probably built before the Great Fire of London. He also comments that the buildings were probably erected before neighbouring Surrey and Arundel Streets existed. Very strict laws were apparently passed after the fire, regarding the building of houses of this type. |

These old houses were probably erected prior to the Great Fire. To the left of them, on corner of Surrey St., stood the old Strand Theatre, which was built in 1831, and demolished when the Underground station was built. Surrey St. and the neighbouring Arundel St. were laid out in the latter part of the XVIITH Century on the site of Arundel House. The buildings shown in the photograph are of earlier date than these streets. Very stringent Acts were passed after the Fire against the erection of houses of this type.
