Description | This is the original artwork for an Underground poster advertising the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum. Ronald Brooks Kitaj was commissioned to produce the work as part of the Art on the Underground series. The inspiration for his painting was a cast of The Dying Slave, a sculpture after Michelangelo that can be found in the V&A's collection. This pastiche of a pastiche created a striking poster. The artist Yves Klein also produced an interpretation of The Dying Slave in 1962. In 2001, Hans Haacke used the original in an installation, Mixed Messages, at the Serpentine Gallery. |
