Description | An official inspects a luggage at Victoria mainline station. In the 1930s, travel between the U.K. and continental Europe was by boat. One of the busiest routes was between Dover and Calais. From Dover, most people took the train into London, to stay or continue to their destination. Trains from the port at Dover arrived at Victoria mainline station. Hundreds of people from the boat train passed through the station each day. Dozens of station porters in uniforms and peaked caps assisted passengers with their luggage. Larger items had to be inspected. The man in the white cap is one of the customs officials who worked at the station. |
