Description
This high-angle photograph shows the women members of staff selected to attend the Victory Day celebrations on 8 June 1946. They are standing on the rooftop of 55 Broadway, the headquarters of London Transport, on 3 June 1946. The women are conductors Irene Reed, Mabel Callaghan, Kathleen Leggott, Dorothy Hunt, Kathleen Newman, Doris Roach, Lily Brooks and Ada Janes. Joining them are porters Elizabeth Clarke and Elsie Birrell. These ten conductors and porters were selected to represent all the women who worked for London Transport during the Second World War. 52 company staff took part in the parade's marching column, and four vehicles in its mechanised column. The celebration took place almost a year after the war ended. Representatives from 30 of the victorious Allied countries gathered to march in London. The day was declared a national holiday, and nearly two million people watched the parade.
