In the 1920s and 1930s, athletic championships were advertised on London Transport posters. After the cutbacks of the Second World War however, fewer pictorial posters were issued and athletics no longer featured in the programme. Since it started in 1981, the London Marathon has attracted huge crowds. London Transport issued posters to show spectators and competitors the best way of reaching the route by tube and bus.
