Decade information - 1950s
In the 1950s, more direct advertising media were beginning to overshadow poster publicity. The number of London Transport poster commissions dropped and quality of design was not always valued over commercial content. The growing reliance on photography for graphic imagery is seen as detrimental to the poster design of this period, particularly in retrospect. However, artists such as Tom Eckersley, Abram Games and Han Unger continued to produce striking posters. Their bold designs have a timeless quality that has proven influential and inspirational to the generation of graphic designers that followed.
