Art of the poster label

Power, 1930 : Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954)

Gouache

By 1930, the American born Kauffer was recognized as Britain's leading poster artist. His challenging designs, in tune with international advances in poster technique, illustrate the Underground's confidence in modern design as a means of communication. This artwork reveals how his American spelling of 'center' was amended before printing.

'[Kauffer] is quite incapable of producing a commonplace poster… This is best demonstrated in the poster entitled 'Power' for the Underground Railway. The strength of the clenched hand projecting from a mechanical background and the geometric construction of the whole poster is typical of the designer.'

Leonard Richmond, poster designer, 1933

By 1914 the Underground Group ran most of the Tube lines, three tram systems and the main London bus company, the LGOC. The posters publicise all these transport modes. Outside the Underground Group were the Metropolitan Railway and London County Council (LCC) Tramways, which ran separate poster campaigns. All these companies were merged into London Transport (LT) in 1933. The four main line railway companies also used posters to promote their London suburban services. Transport for London (TfL) replaced LT in 2000 with wider responsibility including taxis, streets, river services and some overground rail.
