Decade - 1900s
The Underground Group's early publicity was ineffective. Posters, which were predominantly text based, failed to draw together the various transport systems or establish a coherent corporate identity. In 1908, when Frank Pick was given responsibility for publicity, this all began to change. The distinctive 'UndergrounD' lettering was introduced, and the modern graphic poster was employed to its full potential. Bold, striking and direct, No need to ask a p'liceman by John Hassall marks the beginning of the company's graphic poster tradition. The designs that followed fulfilled Pick's aims to provide effective Underground publicity whilst building a positive company image in the minds of the public.
