Decade - 1940s

Sample image from 1940s posterFrank Pick left London Transport in 1940. The Second World War was underway and posters had resumed their propaganda function. They informed passengers of new wartime procedures, commemorated the contribution made by staff and aspired to lift the spirits of the nation. This affected the stylistic approach to London Transport posters in the first half of the decade. Harold F Hutchison was appointed Publicity Officer in 1947. As well as repairing London Transport's systems, Hutchison recognised the importance of restoring faith in the public. He commissioned a number of leading artists to produce pair posters, which permitted both great design and a clear commercial message.
