Artist - Yinka Shonibare

Yinka Shonibare, born 1962 in London. Designed poster for Transport for London 2006

  • Educated; Byam Shaw School of Art, London; 1984-1989
  • Educated; Goldsmiths College; 1989-1991

Born in England, Yinka Shonibare moved to Lagos, the capital of Nigeria, when he was three years old. He returned to London, where he now lives and works, to study. He has since received international acclaim for his sculptures, paintings, photography, and installations. He has exhibited widely all over the world. Considering himself to be 'truly bi-cultural', he explores through his work the social, cultural and political components that shape our histories and construct identity. In 2004 he was short-listed for the Turner Prize. His sculptural installations, made from African batik fabrics, challenged both established readings of Western 'high art' and traditional categorisations of 'African art'.
