Samuel Birch was encouraged to paint from an early age by his mother. Determined to become an artist, he found the time to practise after an eleven hour day working for an oil cloth manufacturer. At the age of15, he exhibited at the Manchester City Art Gallery. In 1892 he moved to Cornwall. Despite having no formal training, he became a professional painter. He was a hardworking and popular artist, painting landscapes in the 'plein air' tradition. A keen fisherman, his love and knowledge of the waters greatly inspired his work. Birch lived near Newlyn in the Lamorna valley, which gave him the nickname Samuel 'Lamorna' Birch.
