Artist - Samuel Fosso
Samuel Fosso, born 1962 in Cameroon. Designed poster for Transport for London 2005
The African photographer Samuel Fosso runs a passport and portrait business in Bangui, Central African Republic. In 1994, a French talent scout brought his work to a wider international audience, in particular his fantastical portraits, largely presenting himself in different guises. Fosso first took self-portraits to send to his mother in Nigeria, after fleeing the Biafran war of the late 1960s. From these pragmatic beginnings, he began to experiment with new techniques and poses, as a cathartic means of exploring his own identity. Platform for Art displayed three billboard sized works by Fosso at Gloucester Road Underground Station in 2005, to coincide with the Hayward Gallery's exhibition Africa Remix: Contemporary Art of a Continent.
