Robin Mason grew up on the coast of Porthcawl. The beaches of his childhood provide the setting for his complex and theatrical paintings, which he populates with historical and contemporary imagery from both ‘the real world and the art world’. Mason’s artistic influences range from the early Italian painters Duccio and Sassetta, to Grunwald, De Chirico, and contemporary German painter Andreas Schulze. He is fascinated by the surreal quality of their compositions and the symbolism, codes and multi-layered meanings of their subjects. Since the early1980s, Mason has exhibited widely in London, Cardiff and across Europe. He teaches at the City and Guilds of London Art School.
