Nancy Smith (also known by the name Annie Smith), born 1881 in Chesterfield, died 1962. Designed posters for the Underground Group 1915-1922

  • Educated; The Slade School of Fine Art;

Biography:

Nancy Smith was born Annie Smith in 1881. She illustrated her first book, The Making of School Illustrations in 1909. By 1920 she had a studio in Grosvenor Road. Very little is known about her artistic training, although she may have studied at the Slade School of Art. There is no evidence of her having exhibited her work, but her bold depictions of London’s countryside could be seen across the capital in the Underground posters she designed between 1915 and 1922. Her arrangement of detail into flat blocks of colour, infused with light, translated into striking and timeless posters.
