Maxwell Ashby Armfield was also known by the name Maxwell Armfield.


Maxwell Ashby Armfield painted landscapes, portraits and still life in tempera and watercolour. His use of bold flat colour and densely patterned surfaces lent a strong graphic quality to his work. He was commissioned for a wide range of advertising work, including a number of posters. He also became a prolific illustrator, costume and stage designer, poet and writer. He painted the portrait of leading poster artist Edward McKnight Kauffer, who was an admirer of his work. Between 1915 and 1922 Armfield lived and worked in the USA.
