M Greiffenhagen (also known by the name Maurice William Greiffenhagen), born 1862 in London, died 1931. Designed posters for the Underground Group 1914-1915

Maurice Greiffenhagen began his career as an illustrator. He contributed to magazines including Punch and the Illustrated London News. He is best known for his illustrations for the books 'She' (1887) and 'Montezuma's daughter' (1894) by H Rider Haggard. Later in life Greiffenhagen concentrated on portrait painting. In his obituary it was noted that 'partly on account of his colour schemes, Greiffenhagen's work had great carrying power, and it is not surprising that he was a good poster designer.' Greiffenhagen was Head of Life drawing at Glasgow School of Art between1906 and 1929.
