Biography:

Leonard Appelbee was an oil painter, lithographer, wood engraver and poet. In the 1930s he studied under Clive Gardiner at Goldsmith's School of Art and under Barnett Freedman at the Royal College of Art. In 1947, after serving in the army during the Second World War, he exhibited at the Royal Academy. The following year he had his first solo show. As well as for London Transport, he designed a poster for Shell in 1952.
