John Cooke graduated with a National Diploma in Design, having specialised in oil painting. He taught in East Anglia before moving to Yorkshire in 1976, where he set up a studio in Dent. He paints portraits and figure studies, but is best known for his expressive and often haunting landscapes, particularly of Dentdale and the Lake District. He enjoys experimenting with a variety of media and his work has been exhibited widely. Many of his paintings have been used commercially, by clients including Shell, Reader's Digest, London Transport and Penguin Books. In 1994 and 1995 he won awards for his writing on painting.
