Hans Unger, born 1915 in Germany, died 1975. Designed posters for London Transport 1950-1974
Hans Unger first studied poster design in the studio of Jupp Wiertz in Berlin (1934-1935). He then emigrated to South Africa to work as a freelance commercial designer in Cape Town. He moved to London in 1948, where he was a prolific poster designer. Through collaborating with the mosaicist Eberhard Schulze, Unger also became acknowledged as one of the best mosaic designers in London. Through the work they did for London Transport, they came to the attention of L.A.G. Pritchard & Sons, who commissioned them to make a large mosaic for the new parish church of St Jude's in Wigan (1965).
