Hal Missingham was a versatile and prolific artist. Starting out in printmaking, as a process engraver's apprentice at Gibbneys in Perth, he went on to develop an interest in photography and a career in arts administration. From 1927-1928 Missingham worked in Canada as a freelance artist and teacher. In 1941 he returned to Australia. It was for his work here, as an author and gallery director, that he is best known. For almost 30 years he introduced enlightened policies of collecting, and organised international exhibitions which greatly influenced the development of contemporary Australian art.
