Ernest Michael Dinkel was a versatile painter, sculptor and designer. He attended the local technical college in Huddersfield, where he grew up, before moving to London to study. After graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1925, he went to study art and architecture in Italy and France, on the Owen Jones Travelling Scholarship. He exhibited at the Royal Watercolour Society, the New English Art Club and at the Royal Academy from 1927 to 1976. He taught at the Royal College of Art (1925-1940) was Head of Stourbridge School of Art (1940-1947), and Head of the School of Design at Edinburgh College of Art (1947-1961).
