Edward Ardizzone was also known by the name Edward Jeffrey Irving Ardizzone .


When Edward Ardizzone was five years old he moved to England. Whilst at school in East Anglia he became interested in art. Starting his working life as a clerk in London, he studied drawing and painting at evening classes. He also kept private sketch books and illustrated his personal diaries. Ardizzone went on to become a prolific artist and illustrator. From the late 1920s he produced his own children's picture books, using the emerging technique of offset colour lithography. He designed posters, wine labels and press advertisements and became an established painter of contemporary life in watercolour. During the Second World War he was an Official War Artist.
