Dora M Batty, born 1900, died 1966. Designed posters for the Underground Group and London Transport 1921-1938
Dora Batty was a prolific artist and illustrator. She worked in a number of media including gouache, pen and ink and scraperboard engraving. Throughout her career she produced numerous book illustrations, as well as designs for posters and pottery. Her popular designs often employed a bold, Art Deco style. In the 1920s and 1930s, Batty designed more posters for London Transport and the Underground than any other female artist. Other commissioners of her work include Mac Fisheries, Poole Potteries and Carter & Co. Batty taught textiles at Central School of Art from 1932. She was Head of Department from 1950 to 1958.
