Artist - Compton Bennett

Compton Bennett, born 1900 in Tunbridge Wells, died 1974. Designed posters for the Underground Group 1926-1928

Compton Bennett was a film director, writer and producer. He began his career, however, as a bandleader and commercial artist. His move to amateur film making earned him a job with Alexander Korda's London Films in 1932, where he became an editor. Although predominantly sombre in character, his films were popular with the British public. During the Second World War he made instructional and propaganda films for the British armed forces. In 1947 he went to work in Hollywood. However, his directing style proved incompatible with the American film industry of the time and he returned to England. In 1954 Bennett left the film industry to work in theatre and television.
