Clifford Wilkinson won a scholarship to study figure drawing and printmaking at Lancaster School of Art. After serving in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, he studied printmaking at the Royal College of Art and became a freelance artist. Notable commissions included poster designs for Ealing Studios and London Transport. Wilkinson went on to teach at Borough Polytechnic, Willesden School of Art and Manchester School of Art, where he became senior lecturer in printmaking in1959 and then head of the school in1971. He retired in 1984.
