Cindy Sherman is a conceptual photographer. Her provocative and intriguing imagery has been the subject of international acclaim. Since the mid-1970s, she has staged and taken photographs of herself in an array of guises. As a model, character and photographer she explores the clichés and stereotypes that have been formed about women in Western society throughout history. An exhibition of Sherman's work at the Serpentine Gallery in 2002, was accompanied by a commission for ten large scale billboards. Each one comprised reproductions of her photographs from 1983 - 2002. They were displayed at Gloucester Road Underground station. Sherman lives and works in New York.
