Cecil Walter Bacon began work as a commercial designer in London in 1926. He worked for an advertising agency until 1929, before going freelance. He produced a series of posters for London Transport in the early 1930s and in 1935 began designing covers for the Radio Times. During the Second World War Bacon designed posters for the Ministry of Information. Later notable commissions included work for British Railways and the Post Office. Bacon was a master of the scraperboard drawing technique, on which he wrote a book in 1951. In 1981 Bacon contributed to Fifty Years of Design, an exhibition at the Design Centre in London.
