Since the mid 1990s, the British artist Beth Derbyshire has exhibited widely across the UK, Europe and USA. Her work has included a number of ambitious public projects, site specific installations, performance and video art. An interested in communication and information systems has informed much of her art, the creation of which often involves a participatory role from the public. In 1995 she was commissioned by the National Maritime Museum to produce a work for Remembrance Day. The performance piece, Message, involved sending a semaphore message along the Thames. The human chain of signallers comprised 20 navy veterans, positioned at key landmarks between the Royal Observatory and the Horse Guards Parade.
