Artist - Alfred France

Alfred France. Designed posters for the Underground Group 1909-1912

Biography:

Alfred France was one of the earliest poster designers for the Underground. While some of his designs, such as 'Underground: the way for all' (1911) are very painterly, others with their flat colour such as 'I came by Underground to Golders Green', 1910 point the way to later Underground designs. 'The moving spirit of London' (1910) suggests that France knew not only the power of the Underground but also well understood the ability of pictorial posters to advertise it. Little is known about his life.
