20th Century London caption: These women, London General Omnibus Company engineering workers, are overhauling a B-type bus chassis in an engineering shop. The eight women wear overalls and caps. Women would not have worn overalls before the First World War, but the circumstances changed many things beyond their clothing. Women had never worked in such numbers and in such varied roles before. They had to be equipped to carry out jobs that had previously been the preserve of men.
