20th Century London caption: This photo was taken in the early 20th century in Ruislip. Until the end of the First World War, Ruislip remained a small village detached from London. The Uxbridge branch of the Metropolitan Railway had reached Ruislip in 1904, but suburban development of 'Metro-Land' didn't really begin until immediately. By 1939 the area had been heavily developed and had become part of London's northern suburbs. Scenes such as this, with a village pub by the green, were common in rural Middlesex before suburban expansion. Poet John Betjeman commented on their disappearance in his 1954 poem, 'Middlesex'.
