20th Century London caption: For much of the 20th century, Covent Garden was known for its flower and fruit and vegetable markets. Although the markets were moved to New Covent Garden in Nine Elms in 1974, many wholesalers continued to trade in the area. Rising rents as the area became more fashionable saw these traditional businesses displaced by boutiques and fashion stores. The shops pictured here were cleared when the Covent Garden station booking hall was redesigned as part of a lift replacement project in 1986.
