The Victoria Embankment, from Westminster Bridge, c1890, showing the then newly erected Whitehall Court and the National Liberal Club. Charing Cross station's original roof can be seen in this photograph, and was, White notes, "an eyesore that removed itself in 1905, when the roof collapsed". Also visible are Adelphi Terrace, the Savoy Hotel, Somerset House, and the spire and clock tower of the Law Courts. A steamboat with passengers is in the foreground by the pier.
