Metropolitan Railway cut-and-cover construction at Praed Street, Paddington. The small steam crane (known as a 'steam navvy'), the upright boiler and gearing of this machine can clearly be seen. A large number of workmen are visible, most of whom are looking at the camera. The arch of the roof of Praed Street (Paddington) station can be seen, background left. Commercial premises line the right hand side of the road.
