District Railway construction. This view shows site clearance immediately to the east of Blackfriars Bridge. Work has largely stopped whilst the workmen look at the photographer. The first stages of a cut-and-cover trench can be seen in the foreground. A horse and cart stand foreground right; two steam cranes, one with a bucket suspended from its jib, are visible, midground centre/right. The dome of St Paul's cathedral is prominent above the buildings in the background.

Unknown photographer, circa 1870
