Cut and cover construction at Praed Street, Paddington, looking towards the east, during the building of the Metropolitan Railway's Kensington extension. At this point, the line passes from cutting into tunnel; the buttresses and retaining walls are nearly finished, whilst the tunnel arching is completed. A steam crane ('steam navvy'), with wooden shelter, can be seen, background centre/right. It is obvious from this shot that the disruption caused by this method of construction for owners of neighbouring properties must have been considerable.
