20th Century London caption: A First World War Metropolitan Railway woman guard waves a flag, signalling the departure of the train from the platform at Neasden Underground station. Many women became members of transport staff because they wanted to help the war effort. Many were also keen to take the opportunity to escape domestic service, which was recorded as many of the women's former employment. The public regularly encountered women working on trains and buses. They were the most visible example of women in the workplace, even if they were there only temporarily. Returning soldiers were guaranteed their old jobs back when the war was over.
