Cut and cover construction at Praed Street, Paddington, during the building of the Metropolitan Railway's Kensington extension. A steam crane or 'steam navvy', with vertical boiler, complex gearing and crude shelter, stands midground left. The workmen seem to have stopped work to pose for the camera.

Unknown photographer, circa 1866
