Copy of engraving by unknown artist, showing use of the Barlow Shield to construct the Tower Subway. Four workmen using the shield. The Tower Subway was the first tube tunnel running beneath the Thames between Tower Hill to Vine Lane (off Tooley Street). Workmen are shown fitting new tunnel segments into the gap left by the advanced shield.
