Piccadilly Circus traffic scene, dominated by motor buses.

Unknown photographer, 1919

Location: Piccadilly Circus, Westminster W1

Image no: Ukn

Inventory no: 1998/88554

20th Century London caption: This is Piccadilly Circus. Horse buses, common a decade earlier, have been replaced by motorbuses and cars. The buses carry their route number on the side as well as the front to make it easier to spot them, since the roads were now busier and traffic travelled more quickly. Pathé's film, J'accuse, directed by the influential filmmaker Abel Gance (1889–1981) is showing at the Pavilion. It was a spectacular success throughout Europe. The silent film used innovative filming and editing techniques, and real soldiers as actors. It was an epic indictment of the First World War (1914–18).
