A group of women Underground staff relax in the Brompton Road staff club during the First World War.

Photographed by Topical Press, 1915 - 1918

Location: Brompton Road, Kensington & Chelsea SW7

Image no: Ukn

Inventory no: 1998/83578

20th Century London caption: A group of female Underground staff members relax in wicker-framed chairs. The transport companies provided canteens and staff rooms that sold hot meals: a cut of meat, two vegetables and a pudding, for 7 or 8 pence. Employers also provided staff with recreation facilities for concerts, dancing and meetings. Athletic clubs were also started during the war. However, as this staff club for women shows, most facilities for men and women were still separate.
