20th Century London caption: A party of soldiers prepares to go on an outing on a B-type bus during the First World War (1914-18). Having been wounded in the fighting, they returned home to convalesce. Two nurses stand on the right. The building in the background is probably a hospital. The advert on the bus is for a play by Hall Caine, then one of the best-read English authors. During the war he wrote many patriotic articles. He was made a Knight of the British Empire in 1918 by Lloyd George.
