Lambeth North Railway training Centre. Station women practice making announcements on a tape recording machine.

Photographed by Colin Tait, Dec 1950

Location: Lambeth SE1

Image no: 1929

Inventory no: 1998/46301

20th Century London caption: This photo was taken at the Lambeth North Railway Training Centre. London Transport (L.T.) trainees were taught various skills, including making station announcements. The picture dates to 1950 when 'received pronunciation', an idea of a single correct way of speaking, was popular. This group of stationwomen are practising their announcement style. One woman is speaking into a microphone held by the instructor. Three others watch. The tape recorder looks huge, although not all of it is visible in the shot. Magnetic tape recording had been developed at the end of the Second World War. Technologies developed during that period had a significant impact on subsequent work practices. Using a recorder like this would have been quite revolutionary in the 1950s.
