The east side of Trafalgar Square in 1880, showing the newly opened Northumberland Avenue, the purpose of which was to open up the Embankment from Charing Cross. At this time no buildings had been erected in Northumberland Avenue. The Grand Hotel can be seen behind Nelson's Column, and White asks us to observe the shadow of the statue on the front of the building. Newly planted trees can be seen around the Square.
