20th Century London caption: The Edgware Housing Estate at Elmer Gardens is near Edgware Underground station on the Northern line. This view looks down a road lined with newly constructed semi-detached houses. The billboard on the left proclaims the suburban dream: detached houses with constant hot water and marble bathrooms, for only £1,065 – £1,125 freehold! The suburbs developed here in the late 1920s and 30s were well planned, with leisure facilities and shops built alongside the houses. People were eager to escape the smoky air of the inner-city slums and raise their families in a healthier environment. This was made possible by the suburbs' good transport links to London.
