Construction work at Craven Hill, between Paddington (Praed Street) and Bayswater, on the Metropolitan Railway's South Kensington extension. This shot gives a very good impression of the enormous disruption caused at street level by the cut-and-cover method of construction; note particularly the uprooted gas lamp propped against the wall, midground left. Nearly all the navvies have stopped work to stare at the photographer.

Unknown photographer, circa 1867
