20th Century London caption: This is the opening of London United Tramways (L.U.T.) electric tramway in Ealing, on 10 July 1901. The event is being celebrated with a procession of trams festooned with garlands. This tram line was one of the first to be electrified in London and was seen as one of the new wonders of the age. Electric trams could carry more people than the new motor buses, their competitors, and so charge cheaper fares. Passengers could ride on these trams for up to 3½ miles for a penny and 13 miles for five pence.
