Lithograph of a proposed elevated railway to solve London's traffic problem. This was one of a number of suggestions presented to Parliament in the pre-Metropolitan Railway era. Carriages, hauled atmospherically, run along the tops of extended verandas attached to buildings at first floor level (which formed a shopping arcade). Pedestrians and horse-drawn traffic can been seen in the street below. The railway was suggested by architect James Clephan and engineer W J Curtis. Also known as Sir Joseph Paxton's 'Great Victorian Way'.
