The Victoria Embankment, looking east from Hungerford Bridge c1873. The photograph shows the vacant sites west of Waterloo Bridge between Somerset House and the Temple. The DR station is obscured by the bridge. White asks us to observe that Cleopatra's Needle was not present at the time the photograph was taken. This is an overall street scene of the Victoria Embankment with buildings in the distance. On the left is the rear of the houses of Lancaster Place and the building on the right-hand corner is the Library of the Middle Temple.
